Advisory Fee Benchmark

With continuing scrutiny over fiduciary responsibility, including expansion of the DOL ’ s fiduciary standard, we created our Advisory Fee Benchmark. This revolutionary tool gives advisers a market comparison to allow advisers to evaluate the “ reasonableness ” of their clients ’ fees against those charged by similar advisers for similar clients. The Advisory Fee Benchmark contains advisory fee data for hundreds of firms, including registered investment advisers, investment adviser representatives, broker-dealers, and others. Over 1,500,000 client accounts of varying account types, size, and investment strategies are maintained on the Orion system.

The Advisory Fee Benchmark is a dashboard within Orion ’ s Trends app, which provides filtering, drill down, export to Excel and PDF capabilities. The tool includes these features:

· Advisers can compare the average fee of their firm to the average fee across all advisory firms using Orion, and where they fall in the overall picture to assess the reasonableness of their fees for each of their clients.

· Displays an adviser’s fee distribution and the distribution across a ll Orion clients.

· Quickly select and drill into client fees outside the norm.

· Account summary with account type, management style, model , annualized fee amount, average fee percentage and more.

· Extensive filtering capabilities including client a sset range, IRA/non-IRA, qualified/non-qualified as well as firm filters to compare with similar firms based on their responses to their SEC ADV Part 1 filing.

· New reports for client meetings to graphically display the client ’ s fees compared to the benchmark.

The Advisory Fee Benchmark assists with regulatory compliance requirements, and also becomes a powerful communication tool to provide transparency to the adviser-client relationship, ultimately enabling advisers to better communicate their value.

Orion Ascent online learning courses

In August of2016, Orion launched Ascent, providing every advisor access to self-guided training. Who built this powerful, interactive, and engaging curriculum called Ascent? Professional educators with a combined 50 years of teaching experience, but with restrictions. Ascent’s learning assessments had to be more fun than a trigonometry exam and more exciting than an actuarial textbook.

Ascent is segmented into Learning Trails, each based around a piece of key system functionality. Users can complete one Learning Trail for Specialized Certification, or complete all Specialized Certifications to earn Universal Certification, AKA infinity-and-beyond! Has anyone achieved Universal Certification? Absolutely! Why? Accountability. Ascent provides management accountability reporting to know exactly who is passing the assessments :), and who is not :(.

From August 2016 to March 2017:
1.9,000+ hours by 2,681 advisors, resulting in 29,000 individual courses passed! Whew!
2.At our current pace, over 100 new advisors register for Ascent each week!
3.90+ Ascent courses include Learning Trails on Billing, Performance Reporting, Trading, Data Reconciliation, and Implementation. Best late-night ratings go to…the Corporate Action Ascent course!
4.Efficiency for all. When an advisor begins using the Orion trading platform, consultation time has dropped from eight hours to one.

Holding true to our value of open architecture, the Ascent technology extends beyond Orion to include other technologies allowing our advisors to directly build Ascent courses for their reps and clients with the Ascent Unlimited program. Ascent is an interactive advisor training platform on steroids, and we are pumped up about it!


Eclipse provides scalable rebalancing and trading capabilities for advisors using the Orion portfolio accounting platform. Eclipse is built on a foundation of Amazon Web Services, which intelligently allocates server resources to ramp up computation power as needed and automatically handle any number of accounts and trades as they are loaded.

In addition to being built on the cloud, Eclipse empowers advisors with trading capabilities to help them rival any robo-advisor feature list:

• Portfolio-level trading – Eclipse is built to be flexible. Advisors can trade at an account, sleeve, or household level.
• Personalized Tax-loss Harvesting settings – Eclipse gives advisors control over tax-efficiency settings at the database, product, client, or even account level. Advisors can set up tax-loss monitoring to harvest losses according to specific criteria.

• Cash Monitoring – Eclipse monitors cash requirements in portfolios to alert users of cash needs. With a single click, the user can take action on cash requirements. Advisors can notate cash requirements for billing, monthly distributions, one-off cash distribution requests, and more permanent set-aside cash requirements.

Analysis Dashboards – Eclipse offers daily data analysis dashboards for simple workflows and quick actions. Dashboards help advisors monitor portfolios for out-of-tolerance positions, alert for a tax-loss harvesting opportunity, or for when cash is over or under target.

• Model Communities – Eclipse includes a model marketplace called Communities. This marketplace allows firms on the Orion platform to upload and market their models to other advisors. Potential buyers can view marketing materials and portfolio analytics, and sign up for a model in minutes. Once they sign up, the models are available in their Orion system immediately.
