John Hancock Investments Target-Date Portfolios

At John Hancock Investments, we believe a one-size-fits-all approach to a plan’s most important investment option just isn’t enough. That’s why we renamed our target-date portfolios and lowered fees to better reflect our multimanager brand. We challenged the status quo by offering open architecture in order to improve potential retirement plan consideration for advisors and plan sponsors.

We have been at the forefront of multi-asset investing and portfolio design since 1995, introducing a wide array of alternative strategies. We recently renamed our target-date funds, which offer two glide paths, more than 20 specialized teams, and a choice of active or passive underlying strategies, to more closely align each offering with its investment approach, enhance diversification, and make them easier for advisors to understand and purchase.

Our marketing campaign includes print ads, digital ads, video, social media, and email to promote our capabilities to retirement advisors and plan sponsors. Since early 2017, our promotion of the target-date portfolios has produced approximately 340,000 impressions through social media channels.

We created a responsive website,, which features timely, easy-to-read digital content, including a white paper, videos, and associated content, which has produced 6,500 page views to date. 250 advisors have downloaded our white paper, “Target-date funds: embracing open architecture in retirement’s most important investment option.”

Over 36,000 advisors have received emails about the features and recent name changes to our target-date portfolios. Our first email had an open rate of 17%, which was 9% above our benchmark. John Hancock Bond Fund

To further educate advisors and investors on the role John Hancock Bond Fund can play in a diversified portfolio, we assembled a microsite, formulated educational pieces, and created advertisements to help advisors facilitate conversations with investors about the fund’s management team differentiators and strong performance without excess risk.

The goal of the fund’s advertising, thought leadership, and microsite was to provide investors with a foundational understanding of the U.S. bond market and the benefits of allocating a portion of their portfolios to fixed income. The materials are designed to serve as valuable tools for financial advisors to discuss fixed-income investing and the strengths of our fund with their clients.

The advertising campaign appeared in targeted industry publications that reach advisors and RIAs such as Barron’s (October 2016 and March 2017; 3.7 million impressions and 39% reach to advisors), Wealth Management (November 2016; 551,000 impressions and 93% reach to advisors), and InvestmentNews (January 2017; 1.1 million impressions and 100% reach to advisors).

We created a dedicated microsite,, which features timely content, including a fixed-income ideas white paper, videos from Senior Portfolio Manager Howard C. Greene, CFA, Finding new strategies for uncertain markets fixed-income brochure, and investor education pieces that provide simple takeaways for advisors to impart to their clients.

The digital content has proved both useful and engaging to our users. The most recent three months had only a 43% bounce rate from the site, well below our benchmark of 70%. John Hancock Investments 529 Day social media campaign

To celebrate National 529 Day and reinforce the importance of saving for a college education on May 29, we created amonthlong college savings social media marketing campaign. This plan incorporated traditional posts on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, as well as paid and promoted posts on the social media platforms. Given the success of prior 529 campaigns, a social media content package was provided for select broker-dealer firms with active social platforms to facilitate sharing through their advisor network.

John Hancock Investments’ successful multi manager approach to investing and 15-year long partnership with T. Rowe Price and the state of Alaska has resulted in $4.4M in assets and a #5 market share ranking among advisor-sold 529 plans. This campaign targeted primarily advisors, many of whom have adopted social media as their primary source of insightful business content.

We recorded more than 226,000 impressions and nearly 500 clicks with our 529-day social media campaign.

By using a blend of promoted and paid media, we doubled the reach of our Facebook page month over month and, on average, added 700 impressions per day on Twitter.

We recorded over 30,000 impressions on Twitter, and outperformed industry average click-through rates on LinkedIn.

John Hancock Investments environmental, social, and governance (ESG) funds

John Hancock Investments launched four new ESG funds in 2016 to address the needs of investors and advisors interested in socially responsible and impact investing.

As people become more attuned to the challenges facing our world, a growing number are choosing to invest according to their values. Our unique multimanager investment app roach allows us to satisfy that objective by searching for the best managers for our ESG funds. We are able to bring the same level of insight and expertise to the ESG market that we do to our other actively managed mutual funds.

Today, our ESG lineup includes funds managed by three ESG specialist firms — Trillium Asset Management, Boston Common Asset Management, and Breckinridge Capital Advisors — with proven track records of combining financial returns with positive impact.

Since the launch in June 2016, our promotion of the ESG funds has produced approximately 1.3 million impressions through social media channels.
