Schwab Target Index Funds

Schwab Target Index Funds are a series of target-date mutual funds constructed with low-cost Schwab ETFs™. Their launch quickly captured cost-conscious advisors’ attention.

Schwab Target Index Funds are the lowest-cost target date mutual funds for retirement plans, with an across-the-board expense ratio of 8 bps and no minimum investments, regardless of plan size. Before these products, the most competitive pricing for TDFs could require minimums of $100,000,000+. Now every plan gets the same low price, and participants don’t pay more because they work at a smaller company.

The TDF series demonstrates how Schwab—because of its scale—can offer straightforward, low-cost products like Schwab ETFs either a la carte, or as ingredients bundled into affordable managed solutions like the target date mutual funds. Each of the high-performing market cap index ETFs that underlay the TDF series has the lowest operating expenses in its Lipper category.

Materials – Schwab released research about the importance of costs to workplace retirement plan participants. And to convey a simple message about pricing, Schwab distributed custom Magic 8 Balls to press, plan sponsors, and plan advisors. Regardless of what you ask the 8 Ball, the answer is 8 basis points.

Exceptional reception – On day one, nearly 30 media stories ran (including in WM), generating 70,000,000+ impressions. On that first day, $5,000,000 in retail assets flowed to the new funds.[/vc_cta][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Asset Managers (Product Enhancement Thought Leadership)” tab_id=”1506003913943-d261c95c-8e30″][vc_cta h2=””]

Charles Schwab levels the playing field for index investors

On February 2, 2017, Charles Schwab made a bold move to level the playing field for investors by announcing plans to slash expenses on its entire lineup of market cap-weighted index mutual funds as well as Schwab Fundamental Index mutual funds, making them available at the same low cost as their Schwab ETF equivalents. Schwab went even further by eliminating all investment minimums for these funds and shifting to a single share class, giving advisors the ability to invest even the smallest clients at costs historically available only to large institutions.

The new pricing, elimination of investment minimums, and single share class for Schwab market cap-weighted index mutual funds went into effect on March 1, 2017. Pending shareholder approval, Schwab
Fundamental Index mutual funds will follow suit effective May 1, 2017. Schwab’s pricing leadership underscores its belief that all investors should have the same access to the lowest cost index funds without hurdles. With Schwab index mutual funds, everyone pays the same low expenses no matter how much they have to invest. For example, with just a dollar, any investor can buy the Schwab Total Stock Market Index Fund at just three basis points.

Investors can’t even buy competitors’ comparable products unless they have $2,500 or $3,000 to invest. And then, they are paying nine or 16 basis points for an index fund that does the same exact thing. In Q1 2017, Charles Schwab Investment Management achieved record quarterly net flows of $7.8 billion in its index products.[/vc_cta][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Custodians (Practice Management)” tab_id=”1506004028621-f41b56ee-c951″][vc_cta h2=””]

Schwab campaign advocates for independent financial advisors among high-net-worth investors

In June 2016, Schwab Advisor Services launched a significant national advertising campaign to advocate for independent financial advisors and raise awareness of independent advice among high-net-worth (HNW) investors. The campaign is the most prominent national marketing and advertising investment Schwab has undertaken on behalf o f independent advisors.

Through extensive proprietary consumer research and advisor interviews, Schwab identified significant confusion among investors about the difference between traditional and independent advice models. The research also isolated the characteristics of independent advice that most resonate with investors. For example, 93% of HNW investors ranked the fiduciary designation as the most important consideration when choosing an advisor.

On the basis of these insights, Schwab developed high-impact, educational ads that feature real independent advisors, and highlight the value RIAs deliver to their clients: trusted relationships, accountability, and a commitment to the fiduciary standard. The ads have appeared in numerous national print publications (e.g., The Wall Street Journal, Barron ’ s, Forbes) as well as via large- scale digital media and video rotations, online media properties, social media, and paid search.

The advertising was complemented with a second key face t of the campaign: the Independent Advisor Learning Center ( ). The site is a hub where investors can learn more about independent advice and connect with independent advisors in their regions using a mobile-enhanced directory.

To date, the campaign has resulted in over 200 million digital advertising impressions. Additionally, the Independent Advisor Learning Center has attracted over 500,000 visitors who have conducted over 30,000 searches for the 1,500 advisors featured in the directory. After visiting the site, visitors ’ familiarity with independent financial advisors rose from 54% to 71%.[/vc_cta][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tour][vc_text_separator title=”Category Finalists” title_align=”separator_align_left”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Asset Managers (ETFs)
